AGCS Gas Clearing and Settlement AG was founded in 2001 with the aim of acting as a central imbalance settlement responsible in the liberalised Austrian natural gas market. The reason for its establishment was the imminent full opening of the market, which required new market structures and clearly defined responsibilities. AGCS officially commenced operations in October 2002, coinciding with the entry into force of the complete liberalisation of the gas market in Austria.
The opening of the market gave end customers the opportunity to choose their gas supplier for the first time. This made reliable, transparent and centrally organised settlement of gas flows essential. AGCS was granted a corresponding licence by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Labour, which thus assumed a central role in establishing a fair and competitive gas market.
Since then, AGCS has been an indispensable part of Austrian market settlement and has made a significant contribution to stability, transparency and efficiency in the gas market.
